How can technology improve parent involvement in a child's education?
I chose this particular topic because I feel that from Kindergarten to 12th grade, parents should know and be interested in what their child is learning and doing in school. I hope parent involvement continues to increase worldwide because studies have shown that, "Parents who monitor their student’s school work and daily activities, communicate frequently with teachers and help develop their children’s plans for education or work after high school have children who are more likely to graduate from high school and to pursue post-secondary education" (Henderson & Berla, 1994). Parents who are actively involved in their child's education correlates with higher grades and scores, and go on to post-secondary education.
I believe students should openly communicate with their parents about their day in school. I grew up having family dinners every night and during those dinners my sister and I would discuss what we learned in school, how our day was, how much homework we had that night, and if we had any tests that week. I will definitely mimic my parents and have the same conversations with my kids. However, including this open dialogue between parents and children, technology can aid in the communication.
Technology can help bridge the gap from school to home in K12 education in various ways. For one, parents can view their child's grades online and see what their schedule looks like week to week. When I was growing up, my parents used to check my grades on the Parent Portal, which I liked a lot because they could see my test grades in each class. This was a great way to keep my parents updated in each class. Technology can also be useful for parents because nowadays, a lot of students are submitting assignments and papers online, and parents will be able to look over their children's work if they please. Also, teachers and parents can email back and forth about any progress or setbacks with the students.
I think teachers, parents, and students will be interested in this topic because technology allows for enhancement in communication and parent involvement in schools. Technology could be one of the solutions to decreasing the drop out rates and increasing college enrollment. I will start off looking for answers by looking for articles online written by teachers and parents as well as researching how technology and parent involvement improves children's success in the classroom. I am excited to start learning how technology can improve parent involvement in K12 education and how it impacts students.
