Parent Involvement is Key to Student Success is a fascinating article by Grace Chen that discusses the importance of parental involvement in student success. Not only had studies been shown that students achieve more in school when their parents are involved in their education, but parental involvement leads to better classroom behavior. According to Chen, "Parental involvement not only enhances academic performance, but it also has a positive influence on student attitude and behavior. A parent's interest and encouragement in a child's education can affect the child's attitude toward school, classroom conduct, self-esteem, absenteeism, and motivation." Interestingly, parental involvement can make positive differences at all age levels. Studies have shown that parental involvement in middle school is as important as involvement in high school. In high school, encouragement from the parents can influence whether a student drops out or graduates. Also, parents of minority or low-income children can be just as effective as other parents in contributing to their children's academic success by receiving adequate training. One of the purposes of NCLB (No Child Left Behind Act) is to get parents of under-achieving children involved in their education. One way to get more involved is by reading with them. This article discusses that reading aloud with a child contributes significantly to the child's reading abilities.
Significant parent involvement is most likely to develop when schools actively seek out ways to get parents involved and offer training programs to teach parents how to get involved in their child's education. Schools with strong family engagement are four times more likely to improve student reading, and ten times more likely to improve student math results. This supports my 20% project because for my project, I am illustrating how technology can improve involvement in a child's education.
